Separation and divorce: a time to move
into the future.
|
 |
The complex emotions that
accompany the end of a marriage or committed relationship can be especially disorienting. By helping people understand their
reactions, work through difficult situations, and find the courage to move forward, it is my hope to make this transition
easier and ultimately rewarding.
Having counseled many individuals going through
the process of separation and divorce, I have come to believe in the great potential this experience offers for positive transformation.
It has been my privilege to help people move from difficult emotions such as betrayal, regret, loneliness, anger, disbelief
and sadness to new feelings of hope, curiosity, humor, optimism, excitement and self-worth.
In addition to working with clients individually, I also conduct support groups periodically for those who are separated
and divorced. Based on the principles of positive psychology, the groups are designed to help participants recognize their
strengths, identify where changes are needed, and take concrete steps in the direction they desire.
I am pleased that participants have offered enthusiastic responses including the following comments:
“This class can make a difference in the rest of your life, helping
you come through separation and divorce a healthy and happy person.”
“It
was enormously helpful to share the journey of separation with others who were experiencing many of the same feelings.”
“This is a group with a focus on the positives. Barbara Birge does an excellent
job of moving us through the process of learning to see the positives in our lives despite the separation and divorce. She
keeps the group moving and accountable and brings in outside speakers when necessary to enhance the group. If you want a different
experience, I would recommend this.”
